Asthma Attack
Bookmark and Share

Asthma is the most common respiratory disease among cats. Any age or breed can be affected. Coughing is one of the earliest signs of asthma in cats. It is not uncommon for owners to think their cat is trying to cough up a hair ball. The difference with asthma is cats will crouch low or sometimes lay on the floor and cough several times with nothing coming out. In severe asthma attacks, cats may show signs of respiratory distress where breathing is vigorous and labored. Always seek veterinary attention if you believe your cat has had an asthma attack.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Take your cat to a cool place to reduce the chance of overheating
2   Take your cat to a quiet place away from noise to calm her down
3   Provide your cat fresh air to breathe or set up a fan on low speed to keep fresh air flowing
4   Use a pet carrier or box and take your cat to the vet as soon as possible
5   If your cat stops breathing provide artificial respiration by closing your cat's mouth with your hands and giving 2 quick breaths into her nose and watch for the chest to rise
6   Give 15-20 breaths a minute, gently pressing on the chest after each breath to help her exhale
7   Continue this until she starts breathing on her own
8   If her heart stops beating you will need to perform CPR
9   If your veterinarian has prescribed medications to deal with your cat’s asthma attack at home, follow her directions and call the clinic immediately.
Warnings
DO NOT handle your cat in your arms more than you need to while transporting the cat to the vet to reduce stress
Tips
While performing artificial respiration stop every min to check for heartbeat either feeling or listening to your cat's chest
Switch to unscented and dust-free litter
Try to avoid feather toys or pillows
Run a humidifier during the winter when the air is dry
Keep environment free of dusty conditions, cigarette smoke, and take care when using aerosolized toiletry and cleaning products
