Bowel Obstruction
Bookmark and Share

Bowel obstructions that occur are commonly caused by ingestion of foreign bodies, but can also occur from fecal impaction, intestinal worms, and cancerous masses. Usually if the item is small enough it will just pass through but on the rare occasion a large item or even string is ingested it is essential to provide first aid as those items can cause serious damage to your pet. Make sure to monitor your pet for unusual behaviors to indicate they may have ingested something they shouldn't have.

Symptoms

Steps
1   ) If your cat has eaten a small object and is not vomiting feed a large meal about 1 1/2 times the normal serving to increase bowel activity and allow the object to pass
2   You can also add 1 teaspoon of mineral oil to her food and mix it in well
3   If you see string coming out of the anus do not pull it out as there could be a hook at the other end or pulling it could cut your pet's intestinal tract, instead just clip the string from where you can see it and so your cat won't pull it
4   Take your cat to the vet as soon as possible if the item is stuck or it's a piece of string hanging out as x-rays may be needed
Warnings
Only wait for the object to pass as long as you know that the object that he swallowed is small and your cat is acting normally
DO NOT give mineral oil directly into the mouth as your cat can inhale it, make sure it's mixed in her food
DO NOT pull any string coming out of the anus as it could cut the intestinal tract
Tips
Make sure to monitor your pet and make sure she is eating and drinking normally
The mineral oil will slick the mass and allow it to pass
