Choking

Unlike dogs, cats are more discriminatory in their eating habits. Foreign bodies caught in the throats of cats are very rare. If you believe your cat is choking, seek immediate veterinary care. Only attempt the Heimlich Maneuver if it's a serious emergency, otherwise seek immediate veterinary attention.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Only attempt the following procedures if you can safely handle your cat without being bitten.
2   Pull her tongue out of the way and use a cloth to try to reach and pull the object out and BE AWARE that cats have small bones that support the base of their tongues so do not mistake them for chicken bone, make sure you can visibly identify it otherwise do not pull it out
3   If you cannot remove the object easily then lift her with the head pointed down.
4   If she is still choking then hold her back against your stomach with her head up and feet hanging down
5   Fit your first into the soft hollow area just behind the ribs compress the abdomen toward your belly and chin with quick pushes for 3-5 times.
6   If the item has not come out then repeat this maneuver while someone drives you both to the vet
7   If the object comes out be prepared to give artificial respiration by closing your cat’s mouth with one hand and gently breathe into your cat’s nostrils.
8   Administer 10-20 breaths per minute for cats. With each breath, one should see the chest slightly rise. (Avoid breathing too hard or over-inflating the lungs.)
9   Keep breathing for your cat until he/she is able to breathe on its own or until veterinary help is available.
Warnings
If your cat can’t breathe past the object then she will pass out and die in minutes
If you can’t pull out the object after 2 tries then use the Heimlich maneuver
A pet can bite out of fear so be careful when reaching in to grab the object
Even if you get the object dislodged make sure to have your cat checked out by a vet
Tips
If you hear wheezing or some noise when breathing then she is still getting air past the object
Carry your pet to the vet in a pet carrier or in your arms
Turn on the A/C in the car to cool down the cat as she may be overheated from having something stuck in their throats
