Clothes Dryer Injury
Bookmark and Share

Cats love warm places to nap and for this reason they may find themselves attracted to the clothes dryer. Some people end up putting their clothes in the dryer not checking its contents which can lead to your cat getting caught. Getting caught in the dryer can lead to a huge list of problems, it is essential to have your cat checked out by a vet immediately.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If your cat is unconscious wrap her in a sheet leaving her head exposed and take her to the vet as soon as possible
2   Watch and treat for shock. Treat and check for signs of shock. (Signs of shock include weakness, pale or grey gums, body temperature changes, & rapid breathing.) Slightly raise your pet’s back end to increase blood flow to the heart. If your pet is hot, cool down with cold compresses to the chest and abdomen.
3   If your pet is non-responsive and has stopped breathing, be prepared to give artificial respiration by closing your cat’s mouth with one hand and gently breathe into your cat’s nostrils.
4   Administer 10-20 breaths per minute for cats. With each breath, one should see the chest slightly rise (Avoid breathing too hard or over-inflating the lungs.)
5   Keep breathing for your cat until he/she is able to breathe on its own or until veterinary help is available.
6   Check that your cat’s heart is still beating by feeling for the heart on your cat’s chest and/or feeling for your cat’s pulse. (The pulse is easily felt in the femoral artery located on the inside of the thigh.)
7   If no pulse or heart beat is felt, begin CPR.
8   Watch out for signs of heatstroke by taking her temperature and make sure that she is in the normal range of 100 F - 103.1 F
9   If her temperature is higher than 104 F sponge pads of her feet with rubbing alcohol to cool her down while it evaporates
10   If there is any bruising or sores from the tumbling of the dryer apply cold packs for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off
11   Make sure to have your cat checked out by a vet as soon as possible
Warnings
DO NOT put ice packs directly on the skin, make sure it is wrapped in a cloth
Tips
