Foreign Object In Mouth
Bookmark and Share

Since pets love to chew on things it's quite common for them to get something stuck in their mouth. These items can be anything from a toy to a bone. It is important to get the item out as quick as possible as your pet will become frantic with it stuck in her mouth. If the item is not taken out immediately it can lead to problems breathing and if your pet is hysterical and won't let you take it out, they may need sedation from a vet to remove it.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Only attempt the following procedures if you can safely handle your cat without being bitten.
2   Pull her tongue out of the way and use a cloth to try to reach and pull the object out and BE AWARE that cats have small bones that support the base of their tongues so do not mistake them for chicken bone, make sure you can visibly identify it otherwise do not pull it out.
3   If she has swallowed a ribbon, tinsel or other type of string material remove it as long as you don't feel any resistance as then it has been partly swallowed, if so leave it alone and visit a vet immediately.
4   If she is choking then hold her back against your stomach with her head up and feet hanging down.
5   Fit your first into the soft hollow area just behind the ribs compress the abdomen toward your belly and chin with quick pushes for 3-5 times.
6   If the item has not come out then repeat this maneuver ONCE more while someone drives you both to the vet
7   If the object comes out be prepared to give artificial respiration by closing your cat’s mouth with one hand and gently breathe into your cat’s nostrils.
8   Administer 10-20 breaths per minute for cats. With each breath, one should see the chest slightly rise. (Avoid breathing too hard or over-inflating the lungs.)
9   Keep breathing for your cat until he/she is able to breathe on its own or until veterinary help is available.
Warnings
DO NOT put your fingers between your cat's teeth to force her to open up
DO NOT pull any string out if it has been swallowed, even partially, as pulling it can cut the tissue inside the pet killing her
Tips
If there are any scrapes, or if her tongue has been bitten she may need stitches in the mouth
