Heatstroke (Hyperthermia)
Bookmark and Share

Heat stroke or hyperthermia (elevated body temperature) is always a life-threatening emergency! Cool your pet immediately and seek immediate vet assistance to increase your pet’s survival. Heat stroke can cause severe organ shut down. Every second counts.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Cool your cat. Get your cat out of the heat ASAP and into a cool environment with fans and air conditioning.
2   While your cat is lying on its side, pour cool water all over pet’s chest, abdomen, and body.
3   Elevate your cat’s legs with cool soaked towels to help increase blood flow to the brain and heart.
4   Place an ice pack wrapped in a towel or an instant cold pack wrapped in a towel to the head only to accelerate cooling of the brain.
5   You can place her in a shower or tub with cool (not extremely cold) water.
6   Offer her cold water to drink
7   Seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Transport your pet to the vet with air conditioner on high.
