Lick Sores
Bookmark and Share

Lick sores develop from your pet's constant licking at a certain part on the skin due to tension or a discomfort in that region. It is almost like a person scratching a sore area. Usually they are found on the lower leg and although they are not an emergency they should be checked out by a vet to make sure there are no serious medical problems involved.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Muzzle your cat so that she does not try to bite you as you help her
2   If there is any fur around the sore trim it with an electric clipper or blunt scissors
3   Use Betadine and cool water to cleanse the wound and then rinse and pat dry
4   Use Cortaid cream 2-3 times a day to calm the itching and any inflammation until you can see a vet
5   To help with the itching give an average-sized cat (e.g., 10 pounds) 2 mg of Benadryl® every 12 hours
6   Place an Elizabethan collar around her or use a cloth wrap over the lick sore to prevent your cat from licking it
Warnings
Make sure to rinse away all the Betadine or soap off your cat before drying
Make sure to contact your vet the same day to set an appointment to have the lick sore looked at
Tips
If you do not have Betadine you can use regular soap and cool water
If the sore is on the leg you can cover her leg with a sock to prevent her from licking it
