Skin swelling can be caused by many different things. Simple problems like bee stings or mild allergic reactions can be treated with first aid. However if the swelling is due to a more serious underlying problem (e.g., a traumatic injury or edema) then you will need to seek a vet immediately. Edema is a type of swelling that is caused by fluid accumulating within a tissue. A good way to identify edema is if you push on the swelling and it leaves a dent in the skin.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If the swelling was caused by mild, blunt trauma use a cold packed wrapped in a cloth over the affected area for 15 min on and 15 min off a few times during the day until the swelling subsides
2   Skin swelling can also be caused by an allergic reaction like hives from a bug bite or sting, give an average-sized cat (e.g., 10 pounds) 2 mg of Benadryl® every 12 hours
3   If the paw or leg is swollen mix 1 cup of Epsom salt in 2 gallons of water and soak feet or dunk her tail for 10 min at a time to allow the body to eject any foreign material like a grass awn
4   If any swelling persists or if your pet is acting sick in any other way consult a vet as soon as possible
Warnings
DO NOT put ice directly on the skin make sure it is wrapped in a cloth
Tips
If there is any earflap swelling you will need to consult a vet as a minor surgery may be needed
