Since your pets skin is heavily covered in fur it is unlikely for them to get a splinter. However on areas on the lower legs and between toes there is less fur and thorns can get stuck into the skin. Small splinters can be treated with simple first aid however large or deep splinters must be taken care of by a vet.

Symptoms

Steps
1   With electric clippers trim any fur around the splinter to view the splinter better making sure not to cut the splinter or push it in further
2   Wash the area with a mild antiseptic soap and water and rinse off all the soap
3   Take a pair of blunt tipped tweezers and wipe them with rubbing alcohol, then rinse them under running water and dry them with a gauze pad
4   Grab the end of the splinter with the tweezers and pull it out in the direction it came in
5   Press on both sides of the wound to make it bleed a small amount, that will flush out debris out of the wound and clean it
6   After removing the splinter wash the sore again with soap and water and then dry thoroughly
7   If the splinter won't fully come out or a small piece breaks off soak a washcloth in hot water and hold it to the sore for 5 min on and 5 min off until the cloth cools 3 times a day
8   If the splinter is in the foot take 1 cup of Epsom salt and 2 gallons of water and soak the area for 10 min at a time twice a day for 3 days to help the body get rid of any debris and bacteria
9   If the splinter is hard to get out, is a large splinter, or a huge piece remains in the skin consult with a vet as soon as you can
Warnings
DO NOT cut off the end of the splinter or push it in deeper while trimming the fur
Make sure to wash off all the soap suds thoroughly
DO NOT use extremely hot water, make sure that it is hot enough to the touch but not enough to burn
Tips
You may also use hand soap or Betadine if you don't have any antiseptic soap
Placing a hot wet compress on the splinter will cause the body to push out the splinter on it's own
