Constipation
Bookmark and Share

Constipation can be caused by a lot of different things in pets such as diet, drugs, stressful events/change in environment, trauma, foreign bodies, and/or masses or defects in the colon or rectum. If you have not seen your pet pass feces in more than 48 hours, seek veterinary attention. The longer waste sits in the digestive system the more water will be pulled out and making it even harder and more difficult to pass. This can lead to nerve and muscle damage. A veterinarian must examine your pet to rule out potential causes and decide the appropriate course of treatment.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Only attempt the following procedures if you can safely handle your dog without being bitten.
2   Clip any fur under the tail with blunt scissors or electric clippers
3   Dampen a washcloth with warm water and clean off anything on the outside of the anal area
4   If stools are not produced after 12-24 hours you may add fiber to your dogs food to increase stool production 1 teaspoon per meal for 10-25 lb of body weight
5   Encourage water intake and if after a total of 36 hours of no bowel movements take your dog to the vet immediately
6   Apply Neosporin 3 times a day to the skin around the rectum if it is inflamed after clipping and washing
Warnings
DO NOT ever pull ribbon, string, or thread if you see it protruding from the anus as it could cause further damage to the bowels
If your dog does not release stool within 36 hours after clipping take him to the vet
DO NOT give any laxatives or enemas without veterinary instruction
Tips
You may also use a sink sprayer or spray bottle to soak the matter
To prevent constipation caused by matted hair keep the fur around your dog's anus trimmed short
