Dehydration
Bookmark and Share

Your pet is made up of 60% water. Even a small degree of dehydration can cause symptoms. Dehydration in animals may be caused by heat exposure, strenuous exercise, loss of fluids from vomiting or diarrhea, and/or due to an underlying serious medical problem. Mild cases of dehydration (e.g. after strenuous exercise) may be treated with oral fluid therapy.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Provide your dog with fresh clean water
2   Offer ice cubes as treats by hand or in a bowl of water
3   If available, offer your dog a pet formulated electrolyte solution (Lectade, Resorb) or a children’s electrolyte solution (Pedialyte) either in whole or dilute it with 50/50 water/Pedialyte
4   If your dog’s condition does not improve within 1-2 hours seek veterinary attention
Warnings
Never force liquids down an animal. If unable to drink or swallow, seek immediate vet care.
Never give liquids to a vomiting pet
In Severe cases of dehydration (e.g. collapse, sunken eyes, increased skin tinting, sticky gums, or no longer drinking at all,) seek veterinary attention immediately
Tips
Be sure to offer free choice water in one bowl and electrolyte solution in another as some pets will refuse to drink “spiked” water
If no other electrolyte solutions are available, Gatorade may be used
If offering Pedialyte, make sure it is clear/unflavored
