Diarrhea

Diarrhea causes loose or frequent bowel movements. In pets this is often the result of them eating something they shouldn't or an intestinal virus. The number one cause of diarrhea in pets is dietary indiscretion (eating something inappropriate such as access to people food, garbage, poisons, a sudden change in diet or a stressful event/environmental change). Other common causes of diarrhea can be something more serious such as infections from viruses or worms, drugs, and underlying medical problems. If the diarrhea is severe take your pet to the vet as soon as possible.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Withhold food for 12-24 hours to rest the gut a chance to rest & settle down
2   If your dog is lethargic, sleepy, or weak rub a sugar solution like Karo syrup or honey on his gums and get to the vet immediately
3   Make sure to provide plenty of fresh clean water at all times so that your dog does not get dehydrated
4   Also offer a free choice electrolyte solution if available to prevent dehydration like a pet formulated electrolyte solution (Lectade, Resorb) or a children’s electrolyte solution (Pedialyte) with a 50/50 combination of water and Pedialyte or Gatorade in your dog’s bowl
5   You may give Pepto Bismol to your dog 1 teaspoon per 10 lb body weight to a max of 2 tablespoons 3 times a day
6   It may take 1-3 days for the dog’s stomach to settle so provide bland food with a 50/50 mix of cooked white rice with boiled skinless boneless chicken breast
7   Feed smaller, more frequent meals at 3-4 times a day of this special mix for 24 hours
8   If diarrhea is gone increase the quantity and decrease the frequency of the meals for another 1-2 days
9   After 2 days gradually mix your dog’s regular food in with the rice and meat at a ration of 30% regular and 70% bland diet until he is back to normal
10   Each day move to 50/50, 70/30, and after 4-5 days your dog should be back on his regular diet
11   If the diarrhea does not seem to be improving or your pet worsens, seek immediate veterinary care.
