Eye Out Of Socket
Bookmark and Share

An eye popping out of its socket (proptosis) can be caused by trauma, excessive physical restraint, and tumors behind the eye. This is a medical emergency and should be treated promptly by a veterinarian to preserve sight.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Only attempt the following procedures if you can safely handle your dog without being bitten.
2   Soak a gauze pad or lint free cloth with lukewarm sterile saline contact lens solution or tap water and place it on the eye and get him to the vet
3   If your dog doesn't allow you to apply the pad then fill a spray bottle with saline solution or water and gently spray the eye every minute
4   Get immediate veterinary attention
Warnings
DO NOT remove the pad to moisten it while travelling to the vet, keep it on and moisten it with a spray bottle
DO NOT attempt to pop the eye back in. It must be done so by a veterinarian using anesthesia.
Tips
Keep a moist paid or cloth on top of the eye even whilst transporting to the vet
Avoid restraining breeds with short faces (e.g. Bull dogs, Pugs, Boxers, Pekingese, Cavilers, etc.) with excessive restraint as their eyes can easily pop out
