Fever (an increase in core body temperature) in pets can be the body’s response to anxiety, heat stress, shock, infectious diseases, drugs, poisons, and serious underlying medical problems. Therefore, it is important to have your pet checked right away if you suspect he or she is running a fever. Normal body temperature for dogs is 99.5-102.5℉ (37.8-39.2℃). Your pet’s body temperature is measured by taking a rectal temperature. A digital thermometer is easiest, but a glass one will work as well.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Take his temperature rectally by having someone first restrain the front end of the dog by hugging his neck
2   Lubricate the thermometer with a water based lubricant like KY Jelly and lift the dog's tail and insert it in the rectum approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) and hold it in place for 2 minutes for a bulb thermometer
3   Remove the thermometer and wipe it clean from any feces present to read the temperature
4   If the temperature is over 105 F mix 50/50 rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle and spray or dab the solution in his armpits, groin, insides of ear flaps, and pads of feet to cool him while transporting him to the vet
Warnings
If the temperature is above 105 F get him to the vet immediately
Tips
Make sure to clean the thermometer with alcohol to avoid spreading disease
Normal dog body temperatures range between 99.5 F and 102.5 F
