Fire Ant Bite
Bookmark and Share

Fire ants are deserved their name because their bite causes a burning sensation. Disturbing a nest of fire ants can result in a mass attack from the fire ants so it's important to get far away from the concentration of the ants before treating the bite. Even though they bite it is the venom from their sting that causes the discomfort. Fortunately they are easy to treat however if the swelling persists or if your pet was stung by multiple ants it's a good idea to have your pet checked out by a vet.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Make sure you remove yourself and your dog from any source of fire ants and if needed hose them off your dog
2   Dampen a cotton ball with ammonia and dab it on the fire ant bite to relieve pain
3   If there is still some discomfort or swelling, apply a coldpack (wrapped in a towel) for 1-2 minutes to the site
4   Consult a vet if needed
Warnings
Seek immediate veterinary care if your pet develops signs of severe allergic reaction such as: hives, severe swelling, breathing difficulties, vomiting & shock
For severe reactions, administer diphenhydramine (Benadryl) allergy tablets by mouth (1mg per pound of body weight) until veterinary help is available.
Tips
You may also use calamine lotion on the bite.
Be sure all ice or cold packs are wrapped in a towel before applying to sting site
