Fleas are the number one cause of allergies in pets. Some pets are more allergic than others and just one bite can send your pet into a biting and scratching frenzy. Pets are actually allergic to the saliva in the flea bite. Scratching and allergies may be so severe, that your pet may develop a secondary skin infection requiring veterinary treatment.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Apply a topical veterinary product for flea control on your dog every two weeks for severe infestations and monthly for maintenance and prevention.
2   For severe flea infestations, ask your vet about an oral pill for fast initial knock down of fleas.
3   Treat all animals in contact for fleas as fleas can spread rapidly between pets.
4   Treat the environment for flea infestations (e.g. bedding, floors, furniture, yards, etc.)
5   Soothe intense itching with an oatmeal and/or aloe vera based pet shampoo. Leave shampoo on pet for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off with water.
6   You may also bring relief from itchy skin by soaking your dog in a bathtub or sink with cold water for 10 minutes once or twice a day
7   If your pet is still scratching despite treatment and your notice skin lesions, seek veterinary attention for further treatment as your pet may have a secondary skin infection.
Warnings
Make sure to dry your dog carefully between soaks to avoid irritation and discomfort
Tips
To avoid fleas in the environment vacuum the entire house especially furniture, baseboard cracks, and dog's sleeping area and dispose of the vacuum bag afterwards
Place your dog's bedding into the wash to rid of any fleas as the soap and hot water will kill them
A once a month treatment like Frontline is a great preventive
Clear away all damp and moist areas such as plant & leaf debris
Block of pet access to dark and damp areas such as under the house or in sheds
