Foreign Object In Eye
Bookmark and Share

Pets can occasionally get foreign bodies in their eyes such as grass seeds, fish hooks, and even ingrown hairs and even eyelash disorders can act as a foreign body. Your pet will be quite uncomfortable trying hard to get it out. It is something that can possibly develop into an infection or even the loss of an eye so it's important to treat it as quick as possible. If the item gets stuck beneath the eyelid or is embedded into the eye you will need to seek emergency vet help.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Restrain your dog by holding him down carefully, it is advisable to have someone else help you
2   Hold open his eyelid with your thumb and forefinger and if it something visible like hair or grass gently pull it out
3   If you can't grab it with your fingers remove it by moistening a cotton ball with a saline eye wash or saline-only contact lens solution and twist the end into a soft point and touch it to the object and it should cling to it.
4   If that still doesn't work then take a cotton ball and soak it with a saline eye wash or saline only contact lens solution and then squeeze it in the eye to flush it out.
5   One last thing you can try if all that doesn't work is to just stream contact lens solution directly into the eye for 1 - 2 min even after the material comes out to prevent infection
Warnings
DO NOT use tweezers or cotton swabs to get the item out because if your pet moves you could do serious damage
If after getting the item out the eye remains red and your dog is experiencing discomfort or pain see a vet immediately
Tips
If the eye turns red after the getting the item out then you will need to see your veterinarian
