Foreign Object In Mouth
Bookmark and Share

Since pets love to chew on things it's quite common for them to get something stuck in their mouth. These items can be anything from a toy to a bone. It is important to get the item out as quick as possible as your pet will become frantic with it stuck in his mouth. If the item is not taken out immediately it can lead to problems breathing and if your pet is hysterical and won't let you take it out, they may need sedation from a vet to remove it.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Only attempt the following procedures if you can safely handle your dog without being bitten.
2   Restrain your pet as your dog may struggle while trying to get the item out
3   To open your dog's mouth place one hand over his head and circle his muzzle with your thumb and middle fingers so the fingertips press his lips against his teeth just behind the long canine teeth
4   Use your other hand to press down on the jaw and open his mouth wider
5   If you can see the item remove it with your fingers or a pair of blunt tipped tweezers
6   If he has swallowed a ribbon, tinsel or other type of string material remove it as long as you don't feel any resistance as then it has been partly swallowed, if so leave it alone and visit a vet immediately
Warnings
DO NOT put your fingers between your dog's teeth to force him to open up
Tips
For larger items like bones utilize a needle-nose plier to remove the item
If there are obvious injuries to the mouth, take the dog to the veterinarian for evaluation
