Foreign Object In Throat
Bookmark and Share

Since pets love to chew on things there is a possibility for them to get something stuck in their throat. These items can be anything from a toy to a bone. It is important to get the item out as quick as possible as your pet will become frantic with it stuck in his throat. If the item is string it is very dangerous and make sure not to pull it out as you can lacerate an organ, get them to immediate medical help. If the item is not taken out immediately it can lead to problems breathing and if your pet is hysterical and won't let you take it out, they may need sedation from a vet to remove it.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Restrain your dog by having someone hugging him to their chest
2   If your dog won't keep his mouth open then have someone else open your dog's mouth by placing one hand over his head and circle his muzzle with your thumb and middle fingers so the fingertips press his lips against his teeth just behind the long canine teeth
3   Use the other hand to press down on the jaw and open his mouth wider
4   The pressure will cause him to open his mouth and sweep back into his mouth with your fingers and try to remove the item
5   If you can see the item in the throat use a needle nose plier to remove it, and if you can't get it out in less than 2 try's take him to the vet immediately
6   If unsuccessful, attempt the Heimlich Maneuver. Stand or kneel behind your pet and hold him back against your body with his head up and feet hanging down.
7   Fit your first into the soft hollow area beneath his rib cage and pull in and up with a strong thrusting action for 4-5 times. Check and sweep the mouth.
8   Seek veterinary attention even if you get the object out to have your pet checked out in case there is damage to your pet’s throat.
Warnings
