Skunk Spray
Bookmark and Share

Pets are curious creatures and love to interact with small things like a fly to larger wild animals. Skunks are not an animal to mess around with since their main line of defense is a powerful odor that they spray. Skunks are known to spay 10-15 ft. It is not a medical emergency but a great nuisance. A hit in the eye however can cause severe irritation and possibly blindness. Simple first aid can take care of removing the stink of the odor from your pet.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Make sure you wear gloves and old clothes to avoid getting the smell on yourself
2   Check your dog's eyes and if they are red or watering then use a stream of contact lens solution to wash them out or gently run water from a hose to rinse them for 10 min
3   Comb the fur before giving him a bath to prevent any snarls from turning into mats
4   Tie up your dog so that you can wash him properly outside or even in a bathtub
5   Use a skunk odor eliminator shampoo from a pet store or prepare a home remedy
6   For a home remedy mix 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide with 1/4 cub of Baking Soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap like Dawn or pet shampoo
7   It is helpful before soaping him to protect his eye with an artificial tears ointment into his eyes
8   Wet your dog's coat and apply the solution to the wet coat and as it bubbles leave it on for 3-4 min
9   Rinse thoroughly and dry him off
