Snakebite

Snakes are found almost everywhere on earth and it is easy for your pet to come in contact with one. Even though snakes will shy away from contact there are poisonous snakes out there that can cause serious problems. The severity of the bite usually depends on the size of the snake compared with the size of your pet, number of bites, and amount of venom injected. Because it is difficult to determine the difference between a harmless and deadly bite, quick medical attention is absolutely necessary from any snake bite.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Make sure to try and identify the type of snake that bit your dog so that you can describe it to the vet. Rattlesnake - reddish snake with a distinct rattle at the back Copperhead Snake- red-brown coloring with hourglass markings 2 1/2ft - 4ft long Water Moccasin/Cottonmouth Snake - Dark brown to black, 4-6ft long usually found near water like a swamp or stream, has a white mouth. Coral Snake - yellow bands next to red bands "red next to yellow kills a fellow"
2   Make sure your dog was bit by looking for swelling and two small cuts from the fangs, be advised that symptoms sometimes don't show up for 7 hours
3   Keep your dog as calm and still as possible and avoid any movement
4   Place your dog in a pet carrier or box and get him to a vet, make sure the A/C is on high in the car to slow down blood circulation
5   Remove the collar in case of swelling so he doesn't choke
6   Rinse the bite wound with water to wash away any surface venom while driving to the vet
7   Place a cold pack on the wound to slow blood circulation and prevent spread of poison for 15 min on and 15 min off
8   Try to lower the bitten area under the level of his heart to slow circulation of venom
9   If you can not get to a vet within 1 hour and the bite is on the leg or tail apply a bandage by wrapping a small towel around the limb and cover it with an ice pack and an ace bandage
Warnings
DO NOT allow your dog to move around a lot as moving around will cause the venom to spread
DO NOT try to kill or capture the snake as it could attack you
DO NOT tie the towel too tight around the limb or you could completely stop circulation, make sure it is snug
Tips
If you have a vacuum pump from a snakebite kit use it within 3 minutes of the bite
Try to identify the snake that bit your dog so you can describe it to the vet
If he was bitten by a poisonous snake you have to get him to a vet or hospital, the more time that elapses between an injection of antivenin and the bite, the less effective the antivenin is
Even though a poisonous snake is killed or decapitated it can still poison your pet
