Bookmark and Share

Dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors or hunting dogs may occasionally develop a toe cyst. Toe cysts are painful, infected, and most commonly the result of trauma to the toe regions or an entrapped foreign body such as a grass seed or awn. A skin mite can also cause it. Toe cysts usually need antibiotics and possible surgery to remove any foreign body. First aid will relieve discomfort and aid in recovery however it is important to seek veterinary attention.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Take a look at your dog's foot for a splinter or any other foreign object and pull it out with a pair of blunt tipped tweezers
2   Take 1 cup of Epsom Salt dissolved in 2 gallons of warm water and soak your dog's feet for 10 min
3   Rinse and dry his feet thoroughly
4   If you see discharge of pus use betadine antiseptic soap and water to soak his feet for 10 min
5   Follow up again with a rinse and thorough drying
6   Seek veterinary attention as your dog may require pain relief, antibiotics, and possible surgery to remove a foreign body.
Warnings
Make sure to fully rinse and dry his feet as moisture to the feet can attract infection
Epsom salt is a laxative if swallowed so make sure your dog does not lap or lick it
Tips
It is helpful to soak your dog's feet in the bathtub as you can do all 4 feet at once
The betadine solution should be diluted with water to the color of weak tea
