Allergic Reaction (Severe) - Anaphylaxis
Bookmark and Share

Anaphylaxis is a rare but severe allergic reaction. It occurs suddenly, can worsen quickly and can be deadly. Anaphylaxis happens after being exposed to a triggering agent. It can be caused by foods, insect stings, medication, and even plants. The agent leads to the release of normal body chemicals such as histamine that cause allergy symptoms. If the reaction is severe it is important to get an EPI pen to the person or seek emergency medical help immediately.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Check the person’s airway, breathing and circulation and provide CPR if needed
2   Calm and reassure the person
3   Try to identify the allergen and have the person avoid any further contact with it
4   If the person has emergency allergy medication like an EPI PEN provide it
5   To prevent shock lay the person flat and raise their legs 8-12 inches and cover with a blanket or coat
6   Monitor the person to see if the allergic reaction worsens
7   Get medical help and be prepared to provide CPR
Warnings
DO NOT assume any allergy shots the person has received will protect them
DO NOT place a pillow under the person’s head if they are having trouble breathing, as this can close the airway
DO NOT place the person flat on their back if you suspect any neck, back, head, or neck injury or if the person is uncomfortable in the position
DO NOT give the person anything by mouth if the person is having trouble breathing
Tips
Ensure the person is calm as this helps reduce anxiety which may worsens symptoms
