Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the lung which causes the reversible narrowing of airways. This leads to difficulty in breathing. Asthma can be exacerbated from infections, exercise, stress, change in weather, smoke, and dust among others. Individuals should identify and avoid things which trigger or worsen their symptoms.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Sit the person upright and reassure them.
2   Loosen any clothing around the neck and chest.
3   Retrieve the person’s inhaler and provide it to the person
4   Follow the person's asthma management plan if they have one. If not, give 4 puffs of the inhaler, breathing in with every puff. Wait 4 minutes then repeat.
5   If the person has trouble breathing after 2 repeats of 4 puffs from the inhaler call 911 immediately.
6   Repeat step 4 until help arrives.
7   Once the person is breathing normally; keep them sitting up, and have them hold their arms above their head as this helps the air ways open up.
Warnings
DO NOT lay the person down as it could make breathing even more difficult.
Tips
Keeping the person as calm as possible allows them to breathe easier, because they can’t breathe they will panic which makes the situation worse.
Remember the rule of 4. 4 BREATHS, 4 PUFFS, wait 4 MINUTES
