Black Widow Spider Bite
Bookmark and Share

Black widow spider bites are harmful especially to young children, chronically ill, and the elderly. The spiders are usually found in garages, wood piles, barns, and garbage piles. They usually appear in the summer months. They are generally nonaggressive and usually bite only in self defense. They are feared because their venom is 15 times more potent than a rattlesnake. They can be identified as a black spider with a red hourglass shape on their abdomen.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If bitten, remain calm, collect the spider, if possible, for positive identification and get medical attention immediately or call poison control.
2   The bite area usually can be identified by 2 faint red dots surrounded by redness and very faint swelling at first.
3   Clean the bitten area with soap and water.
4   Apply a cool compress on the location of the bite and keep the affected limb elevated at or above the heart level.
5   Application of a mild antiseptic such as iodine or hydrogen peroxide prevents infection.
6   Try to keep the patient quiet and warm and contact your local physician or poison control.
Warnings
The very old and very young are at greatest risk. Prompt medical treatment can greatly reduce the danger.
DO NOT try to suck out the poison. It rarely ever works.
