Any severe injury to the leg can cause you to break your bone. Bones will heal over time but it is essential to keep it immobile to prevent any further injury. It is essential to seek emergency medical help to increase healing time and assess any other injuries.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Take person to a safe location away from any further harm
2   Control any bleeding by applying gentle pressure with a large sterile, or clean cloth
3   Cover the entire wound including and any protruding bone with a bandage
4   Immediately apply ice to the injured area to decrease pain and reduce swelling
5   If splints ARE NOT available immobilize the leg by carefully straightening it if necessary
6   If splints ARE available place a splint on each side of the leg while placing a third splint underneath the leg
7   Tie the splints together in 3 or 4 places
8   Transport the person to a hospital or call emergency services.
Warnings
DO NOT put ice directly on the skin
DO NOT try to push back any part of the bone that is sticking out
DO NOT tie directly over the break
Tips
If the person has trouble breathing, pain while breathing, or a wound to the chest call 911 IMMEDIATELY
Splints should reach from above the knee to below the heel
