Catfish Sting
Bookmark and Share

Catfish have venomous spiny fins on them that pack a painful sting. The stings usually aren't serious however they can become infected. To avoid getting stung you should hold the catfish on the palm of your hand, on the ventral side of the fish. This allows you to place your fingers on either side of the pectoral spines, and are not coming in close contact with the dorsal spine. Keeping this grip avoids you getting stung.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Use tweezers to remove any spines in the wound because symptoms may not go away until all spines have been removed.
2   Immerse the affected area in water as hot as the person can tolerate for 30-90 minutes. Repeat as necessary to control pain.
3   Scrub the wound with soap and water followed by extensive rinsing with fresh water.
4   Control pain by taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
5   Seek medical treatment promptly especially if signs of infection are present such as redness, swelling, pain, and pus discharge.
Warnings
DO NOT cover the wound with tape.
Tips
Oral antibiotics are recommended for infection
