Any injury to the chest can be extremely serious. A chest injury with a punctured lung can cause shortness of breath. A chest injury can cause a protruding wound and lead to lots of bleeding. Even if there is no bleeding present there could be internal damage present. It is essential to get immediate medical assistance.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Check ABC's (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation) and call 911 or emergency help
2   Reassure the person.
3   Make sure that any item that remains in the chest injury should not be removed
4   Control any bleeding by applying direct pressure to the wound; it may be difficult to control chest bleeding because the ribs make it difficult to compress the structures that are bleeding.
5   If there is a penetrating injury, apply an airtight bandage on three sides of the wound and make sure not to close the bandage on the fourth side.
6   Leave the unsealed side of the bandage open as the person exhales to allow air to escape
7   Place the injured person with the injured side down.
8   Provide CPR if needed
