Collapsed / Punctured Lung
Bookmark and Share

Any injury to the chest can be extremely serious. A chest injury with a punctured lung can cause shortness of breath. Even if there is no bleeding present there could be internal damage present. It is essential to get immediate medical assistance.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Check for ABC's (Airway, Breathing, and Circulation). Call emergency medical services.
2   Have the person sit in an upright position or position them to have the injured area facing upwards to allow the lung room to expand
3   Control bleeding by using a pad over the wound and apply direct pressure and be advised that it may be difficult to control chest bleeding because the ribs make it difficult to compress the structures that are bleeding
4   A gunshot wound to the chest will cause a sucking sound as air travels in and out with every breath so seal the wound with your hand or an airtight material like plastic wrap.
5   Apply an airtight bandage on three sides of the wound and make sure not to close the bandage on the fourth side.
6   Leave the unsealed side of the bandage as the victim exhales to allow air to escape
7   Seek emergency medical help immediately
Warnings
DO NOT obstruct breathing while controlling bleeding
DO NOT use a tourniquet
Tips
