Concussion

A concussion is a common traumatic injury to the brain due to an impact to the head. A concussion may not be a life-threatening injury, but it can be life changing with both short and long term consequences. It is a head injury associated with a transient loss of brain function, and can cause a variety of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms. It can be thought of as a bruising of the brain.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If a neck or spine injury is suspected, call 911 but DO NOT move the person. Monitor the person’s vitals and level of consciousness.
2   Lay the person on their back and apply an ice pack to the scalp or head for 20-30 min at a time and repeat about every 2-4 hours
3   Take acetaminophen to help ease pain
4   If there is any loss of consciousness or persistent vomiting, keep the person still and call 911 immediately.
Warnings
DO NOT take any stimulants like tea, alcohol, or coffee
DO NOT take aspirin or ibuprofen as it increases the risk of bleeding
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
Note the state of consciousness and behavior as this information can be very helpful to a doctor later
It is recommended that you see a doctor to take a CT scan or MRI to make sure there isn’t a skull fracture
