Dislocated Finger

A dislocation occurs when extreme force is put on a ligament, allowing the ends of two connected bones to separate. It is crucial to have it checked out by a medical professional. This is a common injury in sports such as basketball, baseball, football, martial arts.

Symptoms

Steps
1   The finger may swell instantly so remove any jewelry especially rings.
2   Raise your hand above the level of your heart and seek emergency medical treatment
3   During transport place an icepack 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off on the injury immediately after it occurs to reduce swelling.
4   Buddy splinting (strapping the dislocated finger to an uninjured adjacent finger) may provide some relief while waiting for medical treatment.
5   Take some acetaminophen or ibuprofen to reduce pain
Warnings
DO NOT apply ice directly to the skin make sure to wrap it in a towel
DO NOT attempt to pop the finger back in place by yourself as you can cause further damage
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
The doctor will put the finger back in place and splint it
