Dislocated Jaw

A dislocation occurs when extreme force is put on a ligament, allowing the ends of two connected bones to separate. It is crucial to have it checked out by a medical professional. A dislocated jaw is usually the result of impact on the jaw. It can also occur in rare cases if you open your mouth too wide while yawning, yelling, or biting large pieces of food.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Reassure the person and lean person forward to let any fluid drain from the mouth.
2   Spit out any loose teeth and hold them to give to the emergency personnel
3   Have person hold a soft pad or cloth gently against the jaw
4   Hold the jaw gently in place with your hands during transport to the emergency room.
5   Wrap a bandage over the top of the head and under the jaw however the bandage should be easily removable in case of vomiting
6   Take person to the nearest emergency center

Take the person to the nearest emergency center immediately
Tips
DO NOT attempt to correct the position of the jaw
After a dislocation, avoid hard/tough foods. It is best to have soft foods such as mashed potato, soups, oatmeal etc
Try to relax the jaw as this may help the jaw relocate by itself, especially if the dislocation was non-traumatic.
