Eye Injury (Blunt Trauma)
Bookmark and Share

The eye is a very sensitive organ and any trauma or injury to the eye can cause intense bleeding in and around the eye. Bruising of the skin surrounding the skin is classically seen as a “black eye” and although unsightly, is usually not a serious condition. Prompt application of first aid techniques will help to minimize the swelling and discomfort. If the person has any of the symptoms marked with **, seek medical attention immediately as this indicates a more serious injury and risks permanent damage to the eye and potential loss of vision.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Gently apply cold compresses IMMEDIATELY: 5 - 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.
2   Use cold compresses for 24 to 48 hours, then switch to warm compresses intermittently, this helps the body reabsorb the leakage of blood and may help reduce discoloration.
3   If the person is in pain, give acetaminophen like Tylenol.
4   Prop the head with an extra pillow at night, and encourage the person to sleep on their back or on the uninjured side of the face to reduce pressure to the injury.
5   Consult your doctor who may recommend an in-depth evaluation to rule out damage to the eye.
6   Call 911 or bring the person to the nearest emergency room if a. Bleeding from the eye b. Constant / blood stained tearing c. Complete lack of vision d. Severe and persistent headache
Warnings
If you use ice, make sure it's covered with a towel or sock to protect the delicate skin on the eyelid.
DO NOT give aspirin or ibuprofen, which can increase bleeding
DO NOT rub, press, or apply pressure on injured eye
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen
Tips
Call your doctor immediately if you notice increased redness, drainage from the eye, persistent eye pain, any changes in vision, and bleeding
If ice/ice pack is unavailable, you can use a bag of frozen vegetables as a substitute. Use of frozen meats should be avoided as it unhygienic.
