Fractured Ankle
Bookmark and Share

A bone fracture is a medical condition in which there is a break in the continuity of the bone. A fractured ankle can occur in motor vehicle accidents, in a trip and fall, “rolling” or “twisting” of the ankle. Ligaments can also be affected in a fractured ankle. Symptoms may be similar to a dislocation, so it is important to have it checked by a medical professional. Osteoporosis or cancer may increase the risk of fractures.

Symptoms

Steps
1   DO NOT move the person unless necessary to remove them from danger. Help the person lay down and carefully support the injured ankle with padding.
2   Reassure and keep the person calm. Call 911 or your local emergency services.
3   Control any bleeding by applying firm, direct pressure on the wound.
4   Support the injured ankle by using something stiff like a wooden board, thick secured roll of newspaper to splint the limb on either side. This also immobilises the ankle to prevent further injury.
5   Secure the splint with a bandage or tape above and below the site of injury. Be sure to secure the heel to provide added support.
6   Wait for emergency services or take the person to the nearest emergency center.
Warnings
