Gila Monster Bite
Bookmark and Share

Gila monsters are usually found in the deserts of Southwest U.S. They are venomous and have a powerful bite. Although their venom is akin to that of the coral snake, they are very slow and sluggish and so do not pose much threat to people. It is a good idea to avoid them when possible. Also note that they are protected by state law in Nevada and Arizona. They are also being studied as a potential source of medicine to be used in humans.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Disengage the lizard as quickly as possible without breaking the teeth off in the wound.
2   Submerging the lizard and affected area of your body in cold water or lighting a match under the lower jaw can help as well. Prying the jaws with pliers or screwdriver will work too.
3   Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and rinse it under running water for 10 to 20 minutes
4   Cover the bite site with clean dressing and apply pressure for at least 5 minutes.
5   Immobilize the affected limb at heart level
6   Seek medical attention immediately
Warnings
Make sure to remove the lizard without breaking its teeth
Tips
Keep the person as calm as possible to stop the spread of venom
