Heat Exhaustion
Bookmark and Share

When the active body is exposed to hot, humid environments, mechanisms such as perspiration occur to cool the body. Heat-related problems occur when temperature-reducing mechanisms get overwhelmed, especially during physical activity, and become inefficient or stop working. Heat exhaustion develops when a person’s body becomes dehydrated from the loss of fluids to the environment.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Stop activity and move person to a cooler place. Loosen or remove excess clothing.
2   Have the person lie down and elevate the legs.
3   Spray water or apply cool, wet cloths to head and torso. Use a fan to speed evaporation.
4   Give cool water or sports drink to sip if alert.
5   If person does not improve, seek medical attention.
Warnings
Be safe! Make sure repeated injury does not occur.
Without treatment heat exhaustion could progress to heat stroke and become life-threatening.
DO NOT drink any coffee, soda, or alcohol
Tips
Heat cramps are uncontrollable muscle spasms that can affect the calves, arms, abdominal muscles, and back. They can occur rapidly and be very painful.
Manage cramps by stopping activity, moving to a cooler locations, and drinking water or a commercially available sports drink. Stretching and direct pressure to the cramping muscle may help. Delay further activity until the cramping has resolved.
