Hyperventilation
Bookmark and Share

Hyperventilation is the state of breathing faster and/or deeper than necessary. This is most commonly due to tension or emotional anxiety/panic attacks, but may also be in response to metabolic acidosis which is a medical emergency. The symptoms are not a result of inadequate amounts of oxygen in the blood, but rather a reduction in the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the blood. The lack of CO2 results in a more alkaline blood and contributes to the severity of the symptoms.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Reassure and calm the person down. Encourage the person to control and slow their breathing, inhaling through their nose, and exhaling out their mouth.
2   Have the person lay down on the floor with their knees bent and place one hand on their chest and the other hand below the ribs.
3   Have the person with pursed lips, take a deep breath through their nose and while inhaling tell them to let their belly push their hand while keeping the chest still.
4   Have them use their hand on their belly to help push air out and repeat 3-10 times while taking their time with each breath.
Warnings
Breathing into a paper bag to treat hyperventilation is no longer recommended.
Tips
Breathe through your nose as it’s harder to hyperventilate
Try to reduce anxiety and stress in your everyday routine
Even after breathing returns to normal it is recommended you speak to a doctor to find the reason for the hyperventilation
