Cold temperatures can result in a generalized cooling of the body known as hypothermia. Hypothermia is when the body temperature has decreased to 95° F or less. Body processes become impaired and eventually fail. Cardiac arrest may occur.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Activate EMS or emergency services without delay.
2   Move person to a warmer place.
3   Remove wet clothing.
4   Cover with dry warm blankets or other insulating items.
5   Cover head and neck to help retain body heat.
6   Handle gently.
7   If access to EMS is not available: Place near a heat source. Place containers with warm (not hot) water against skin.
Warnings
DO NOT use direct heat such as a radiator, campfire, heating pad, hair dryer etc.
Be Safe! Make sure repeated injury does not occur.
DO NOT massage limbs or allow person to walk or exert themselves.
DO NOT give anything to eat or drink.
Severe hypothermia results in loss of shivering, slowing breathing and heart rate.
Tips
The main risk factors of hypothermia include being older than 65, mental impairment, and the use of alcohol and drugs.
It is best to suspect and recognize hypothermia early. The chance for survival decreases as the condition progresses.
