Jellyfish Sting
Bookmark and Share

Jellyfish can be found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea as well as some freshwater areas. They vary in shape, size, color and lethality. They are a delicacy in some cultures such as in China and Japan. All jellyfish have tentacles that contain active stinging cells which they use to stun their prey. Some cause adverse reactions in people and even death.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If the person has shortness of breath, weakness, or chest pain, or if the person faints, call 911.
2   Remove any remaining tentacles with a gloved hand or a hand wrapped in a towel. You may also use tweezers to remove the stinging cells.
3   Wash the area with copious amounts of sea water to remove and deactivate the stinging cells.
4   Pour vinegar on the wound to prevent the release of additional venom.
5   Rub with a paste of sand or mud and seawater.
6   To relieve pain take acetaminophen, and to relieve inflammation take an oral antihistamine.
7   Immobilize the body part to slow the spread of venom.
8   Dry the wound site with sand, powder, cornstarch or a meat tenderizer.
9   If there is swelling at the site, place a cold compress or an ice pack on the area for 20 minutes every hour.
10   Monitor level of response, breathing and circulation. Perform CPR if required.
11   If the person has shortness of breath, weakness, or chest pain, or if the person faints, call 911 or take the person to the nearest hospital emergency department.
Warnings
DO NOT use fresh water or tap water because fresh water can stimulate the stinging cells to release venom
DO NOT use your bare hand to remove tentacles as they can still sting you.
Try not to apply creams or lotions because if the sting is not neutralized, the creams may trap the poison in the skin.
DO NOT scrub the affected area.
Tips
Urine does not work on a jellyfish sting, it does not have enough acid to neutralize the venom so use vinegar
