A migraine is a neurological syndrome characterized by altered bodily perceptions, severe headaches, and nausea. It can present as a throbbing headache in a specific region or generalized headache. During migraines, people are very sensitive to light and sound. There are various triggers of migraine which include caffeine, lack of sleep, some foods, smoke, alcohol or fluctuating levels of hormones. Knowing what triggers your migraine and avoiding it is ideal. Migraines tend to have a genetic component and may “run in the family.” Having a “headache diary” may help identify these triggers. Migraine headaches may potentially be an indicator of something more sinister and should always be checked by a medical professional especially if persistent for more the 1 day, not linked to any specific trigger and/or increases in intensity and severity.
