Substances that create harmful reactions in the body are known as poisons. By far, poisoning most often occurs through ingestion, usually by a young child. Common ingested poisons include medications, cleaning products, pesticides, paints, solvents, contaminated food, and poisonous plants. The signs, symptoms, and effects of ingested poisons are wide-ranging and can resemble those of common illnesses. Depending on the poison, specific treatments may be required.
