Puncture Wound
Bookmark and Share

A puncture wound is an injury caused by an object piercing the skin and creating a small hole. Some punctures are on the surface and some can be very deep. Always get the wounds checked by a medical professional as they may be infected easily or also damage underlying organs/tissues.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Reassure and keep the person calm.
2   Rinse the wound with clear clean water.
3   Clean the area around the wound with soap and a clean washcloth.
4   Control any bleeding by applying firm, direct pressure on the wound.
5   Use a tweezers cleaned with alcohol to remove small particles, debris, dead skin, and flakes of clotted blood
6   After cleaning the wound apply a thin layer of an ointment like Neosporin to keep the surface moist.
7   Cover the wound with a bandage.
8   Change the dressing regularly whenever it becomes wet or dirty.
9   Watch for signs of infection and contact your doctor if the wound doesn't heal or if you notice any redness, drainage, warmth or swelling.
10   If you have not had a tetanus injection in the last 10 years or are unsure of your immunization status, seek your doctor for a tetanus booster.
Warnings
Seek emergency medical attention if object that caused the wound is still intact and won’t come out
Tips
Apply the ointment with a clean swab or gauze and not directly from the tube otherwise it could cause contamination of the tube
Make sure you have gotten your tetanus shot otherwise you may need one
