Scalp Wound
Bookmark and Share

The scalp is the skin covering the head. It has many small blood vessels running close to the surface. If the scalp is injured it can result in profuse bleeding causing an injury to seem worse than it actually is. Any scalp wound should be checked by a medical professional as stitches may be required.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Reassure and keep the person calm. Call 911 in severe bleeding or if the person is unconscious.
2   Place a sterile wound dressing over the wound.
3   Control any bleeding by applying firm, direct pressure on the wound.
4   If additional blood is seeping through the dressing, secure with an additional sterile dressing on top of the original one without removing the first, continue to apply pressure.
5   Help the person sit in a comfortable position.
6   Monitor for signs of shock, level of consciousness, breathing and circulation. Perform CPR if required.
7   Take the person to the nearest emergency room or CALL 911.
Warnings
Keep track of consciousness especially if the wound followed a blow to the head.
Tips
Monitor and record the person’s vital signs until help arrives
