Scombroid Poisoning
Bookmark and Share

Scombroid poisoning is a foodborne illness that results from eating spoiled (decayed) fish. It is the second most common type of seafood poisoning, and is often mistaken for an allergic reaction. It typically occurs when people eat certain fish that have been inadequately preserved. Poisoning is due to a naturally occuring enzyme in the fish which when inappropriately stored or processed, is converted into histamine resulting in a reaction similar to that of an allergy.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Call poison control if the poisoned person is awake, alert, and has eaten the fish within 3 hours. The Poison Control Hotline is (800) 222-1222
2   Use of an antihistamine will reduce symptoms
Warnings
With sudden or significant symptoms the person should be taken immediately to an emergency medical center
Tips
Symptoms will occur within 2 minutes to 2 hours from eating the fish
Be sure to tell the emergency center the type of fish eaten, the time it was eaten, where it was eaten and amount swallowed
