Sea Urchin Puncture
Bookmark and Share

Sea urchins are covered with poisonous spines. They are non-aggressive marine animals found all over the world and they live in shallow, rocky bottoms, or hide in sandy cervices. Human contact with sea urchins is either accidental or intentional. People accidentally step on them in shallow surf, or intentionally pick up and get pricked with a spine.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Use tweezers to remove any spines in the wound because symptoms may not go away until all spines have been removed.
2   Immerse the affected area in water as hot as the person can tolerate for 30-90 minutes. Repeat as necessary to control pain.
3   Scrub the wound with soap and water followed by extensive rinsing with fresh water.
4   Apply a cold compress to the wound. Wrap ice in a plastic bag or towel before applying to skin.
5   Apply hydrocortisone cream 2-3 times daily as needed for itching and discontinue immediately if any signs of infection appear.
6   Apply topical antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin) 3 times per day if signs of infection, such as pus, redness, or heat, are present.
7   If symptoms persist for longer then 2 days, or increase in severity, seek medical attention.
Warnings
DO NOT cover the wound with tape.
Tips
Immersing the affected area using vinegar as hot as the person can take instead of water has been shown to work better
Oral antibiotics are recommended for infection
