Seaweed Irritation
Bookmark and Share

Seaweed irritation such as algae and coelenterates are found worldwide in salt water and fresh water and can cause skin irritation. Most algae cannot be seen by the naked eye, so exposures to them are usually accidental.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Remove any visible seaweed with gloved hands.
2   Wash and scrub the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and flush it extensively with fresh water.
3   Follow up by rinsing it with isopropyl or rubbing alcohol.
4   Apply Hydrocortisone cream 2-3 times daily to relieve itching and an antihistamine like Benadryl as described.
5   If symptoms persist longer than 2 days, or increase in severity, seek medical attention.
Warnings
If any evidence of infection shows such as redness, pus, pain, a foul odor, heat, or fever consult a medical professional to get antibiotics
Tips
Make sure to thoroughly wash your swim suit as well
