Shellfish Poisoning

Shellfish poisoning is caused by eating shellfish contaminated with bacteria or viruses. Contaminated shellfish include shrimp, crabs, clams, oysters, dried fish, and salted raw fish. On rare occasions, shellfish may have consumedt dinoflagellates which are other organisms capable of releasing toxins. In this case, the poisoning becomes more severe and may result in paralysis.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Call poison control if the person is awake, alert, and has eaten the contaminated shellfish within the last 3 hours.
2   Call 911 or transport the person to the emergency room
3   If the person had reduced levels of consciousness, lay the person on their side to prevent the person from swallowing any vomit.
4   Monitor the person’s level of consciousness, breathing and circulation. Provide CPR if necessary until emergency help arrives or you arrive at the hospital.
Warnings
Be aware they may become paralyzed
Tips
The first aid steps should be conducted while waiting for an ambulance to arrive or while going to the hospital
