Snakebite
Bookmark and Share

A bite from a snake although painful can potentially cause some serious injury. Snakes are usually harmless to humans and do not charge or attack people unless provoked. However, the bite can lead to swelling and other side effects. Always seek medical attention. Never attempt to capture the snake yourself; try to remember the coloration of the snake if possible.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Move away from the snake’s striking distance
2   Remove any tight clothing or jewelry around the site of the bite
3   Reassure and keep the person calm. This will help reduce the spread of any venom.
4   Wash the bite area with soap and water.
5   Apply a compression bandage directly over the bite and another bandage both above and below the bite, ensuring skin is covered. This will help slow the progression of any toxin present.
6   Make sure to keep the bitten area lower than the level of the heart
7   Seek help from the nearest emergency department and call poison control.
8   Monitor the person’s level of consciousness, breathing and circulation. Perform CPR if necessary.
