Bookmark and Share

A sprained Elbow is stretching and or tearing of ligaments that stabilize the elbow. Remember R-I-C-E Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevate.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Rest your elbow and avoid using or moving your elbow
2   Apply ice or a cold pack to the elbow for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off, 3-4 times a day for several days to help reduce pain and swelling
3   Wrap your elbow in an elastic compression bandage to limit swelling and support your elbow
4   To reduce inflammation and pain take some ibuprofen or acetaminophen (Tylenol)
5   Wear a sling to immobilize your arm and elbow
6   Make sure to see a medical professional as a cast or splint may be required for 2-3 weeks
Warnings
DO NOT apply ice directly to the elbow, make sure you wrap it in a cloth
DO NOT wrap your elbow too tightly because it could compromise the circulation.
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
Make sure to seek medical evaluation of the elbow injury to rule out a broken bone
In some cases surgery may be needed to repair a ligament that is torn completely
