Sprained Knee
Bookmark and Share

A sprain is an injury to ligaments that is caused by being stretched beyond their normal capacity and possibly torn. A muscular tear caused in the same manner is referred to as a strain. In some cases where either the ligament or muscle tissue is torn, immobilization and surgical repair may be necessary. Remember R-I-C-E Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevate.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Stay off the injured knee so you do not injure it further
2   Place a cold pack or an ice wrapped in a cloth over the knee intermittently for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 12 - 24 hours to lower swelling.
3   Apply a compression bandage, pillow, or blanket splint to the knee.
4   Make sure to keep the knee elevated above the level of the heart and avoid walking if possible.
5   Take some ibuprofen or naproxen to alleviate any pain and inflammation
Warnings
DO NOT place ice directly on the skin, instead wrap it in a cloth
Make sure the person is not allergic to ibuprofen or naproxen
Tips
Loosen the support if swelling starts to increase.
Seek medical attention if pain and swelling persist
